Chapter Twenty-Three
Blood trickled down my throat, across the curve of my breast, and then soaked into my bra. Blood dripped from the cuts all over my torso. I’d have thought my blood would feel warm as it traveled across my body, but instead I was cold all over, shivering, and the blood itself seemed like a trail of ice as it traveled across my skin.
Corson stepped into the room. His gaze swept over me coldly. “Cutting her shirt off seems gratuitous, doesn’t it?”
“I needed my canvas,” the demon said. He tossed the bloody scalpel on the cart. “You going to work your magic?”
Corson had a Starbucks cup in his hand, and the faintest scent of blonde roast mixed with the coppery tang of blood that filled the air. He took a long sip before he said, “I suppose.”
Pain from the shallow slices all over my body crackled across my skin, and my shoulders ached from fighting against my bonds with my arms suspended above me. “Why don’t you let me loose for the show?”
The faintest smile touched Corson’s lips. “Because no one trusts you to stay put where you’re supposed to be. That has been your downfall, hasn’t it?”
“I think it’s a little early to call it a downfall,” I said. My voice came out in a whisper. I’d mostly lost my voice to screaming. The raspy sound of it startled me.
“Agree to disagree.” Corson started to put his cup down on the cart, then hesitated. He glanced around the room, clearly looking for a safe place to leave his coffee. “Is there any place in this room that isn’t covered in blood splatters?”
“Not really,” the demon said. “Did you get the guys on your way in? They wanted to watch.”
“This is work, not fun,” Corson said.
“Why choose?”
Corson heaved a sigh. I had a feeling both demons and humans drove him nuts. “Just stand by the wall, hold this, and don’t talk to me.”
He handed the demon his coffee cup. The demon looked a bit affronted, but he took it.
Corson crossed the distance to me in a few quick strides. When his hands reached up to cup my face, I tried to pull away. My hair tangled in the chains and jerked out painfully from the roots as I tossed my head, trying to avoid his gaze.
“Look at me, Deidra,” Corson said, his voice commanding. “You tried to run away from your past. You’ll find you never run into a pleasant future that way.”
Wow. Life advice. From the demon.
“Are you the legion of Hell or a goddamn fortune cookie?” I asked, my gaze still fixed on the bloody ground and part of Cade’s feet. Guilt twisted through my stomach, feeling like nausea. Maybe it was a good thing he was unconscious. He hadn’t heard my screams. But his would haunt me forever.
Corson’s hand wrapped around my chin, forcing my gaze toward his. I tried to look anywhere but into his eyes, but once my gaze accidentally flickered by his magnetic eyes, I couldn’t resist anymore.
